Julie has maintained a private voice studio for the past twenty years. She is also on faculty as a voice teacher at Mount Royal University and the University of Calgary.
In her own words…
Although being a voice teacher was not at all in my original plans, the first time I helped a young singer to realize just a little a bit of his potential, I was fascinated. A small step caused his eyes to light up. He realized he was able to do something much better than he thought he could. It was so exciting!
Teaching voice is essentially going on a journey with a student to help them discover what they can do. In learning to sing we are exploring ourselves -- our breath, our body connection to that breath, our need to communicate and our ability to put that all together as we make music. And there is so much music to discover -- more music than there is time to experience. Better get started!
Julie is often asked to coach singers on Renaissance and Baroque music. Style, language, context, editions, instrumentation and ornamentation are areas she loves to explore with students – from beginners to young professionals.
